His Story
His Story
Jason grew up in Rhode Island, and was particularly influenced by his mother and grandfather - from whom he also received his love of good conversations, ice cream, and terrible puns. A nerd from an early age (his brother had all the athletic talent), Jason loved things like computer programming and math teams, politics and debate, playing violin in quartets and orchestra, and becoming an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.
Jason studied applied mathematics, physics, and thanatology (the study of grief) at the University of Rhode Island, and received early acceptance to medical school at Brown University. He completed residency in emergency medicine and then fellowship in palliative care in Boston, and practices both specialties there now.
When not working, he enjoys trying to catch up from a decade of sleep deprivation during his medical training, time with friends and family, seeking the perfect cup of coffee, getting outdoors and trying new restaurants with Kristen, and travel.
Jason's mother Sally was an incredible woman beloved for her huge heart, wit and humor, dedication to helping others, and ability to talk and connect with anyone she met. Sally trained in college as a classical pianist, then entered the field of banking, earned an M.B.A. while working full-time, and rose to a national position. Given the health needs of her two sons, she left banking to homeschool them and also ran a busy piano studio. Once her sons were both in college, she returned to the business world as a national large bank examiner for the U.S. Treasury Department, retiring in 2018. Sally bravely battled breast cancer for over 15 years, until succumbing to it in September 2022. While we are heartbroken that she couldn't physically be present for our wedding or upcoming belated celebration, we know she'll be there in spirit.
Brother Rob came crashing into the world just over two years after Jason, and unlike Jason was an angelic baby (though he grew out of that quickly). Growing up as kids they were partners in crime, and much to Rob's chagrin often mistaken for twins. As they grew older Robert became the clear athlete of the pair, excelling in junior varsity and then varsity sports. Much to our surprise, after not particularly liking math growing up, in college he fell for the field of finance and earned his degree in it with honors. He worked in finance in New York City after graduation, then when COVID-19 hit started telecommuting and ultimately settled in Texas with his partner-in-crime Jess. He inherited Sally's green thumb, and has loved starting a big garden this spring. He and Jess also just adopted a beautiful rescue dog named Elsie.
Jason was very close with his grandparents (Boyce and Madeline) growing up. Boyce and Jason in particular spent countless hours talking about anything and everything, playing chess, and going for walks and hikes. Boyce and Madeline were married after he returned from serving in World War II, raised 6 children including Sally, and were happily married for over 50 years. In many ways their respective personalities and relationship mirror ours, which encouraged us as we were considering becoming engaged. Sadly, both Hollopeter grandparents also died from cancer, like Sally, but we know they'll be with us in spirit and we hope for as long and committed a marriage as theirs.
